Maskless Kolkatans dare Covid, all ‘for oxygen’

The mask is still a burden for many Kolkatans, who feel confident to move about without the first line of defence. The Telegraph spoke to some of them

A traffic cop stopped a man without mask near Jadavpur 8B bus stand in south Kolkata. “How can you not wear a mask?” the cop asked. The cop then gave him a new mask. “We should not see you without a mask,” the cop warned him.

A woman was walking down a road in Golpark in south Kolkata with her mask hanging from one of her ears. When pointed out, she said: “I removed it to breathe in some oxygen. I wear it throughout the day otherwise.”

A shopkeeper in Hatibagan in north Kolkata, who had among other items a bunch of masks at his shop, was not wearing one himself. “How can I run my business with a mask on? I have to talk to people,” he said.
