A man and his son, returning home after the father’s treatment at a government hospital, died in a road accident on Basanti Highway on Sunday morning.

Police said Labab Ali Hati, 61, who was undergoing dialysis, and Momin, 40, were returning home to Bhangar, in South 24-Parganas, on a motorcycle.

The accident happened near Calcutta Leather Complex. Both were taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared dead.

An officer of Calcutta Leather Complex police station said both were wearing helmets.

The police found the two lying on the road near their damaged bike. “It is not clear whether the motorcycle lost balance and crashed or it was hit by another vehicle,” said an officer.

The cops found a mobile phone at the spot. They called the victims’ family from it.

The police said Momin earned a living by selling green coconuts.

The fatal squad of the traffic police has taken over the investigation.

Basanti Highway witnesses a number of road accidents every year because of sharp turns on the road or the tendency of motorists to speed.

The police said they were trying to ascertain the exact cause of Sunday morning’s fatal accident.

The two-wheeler will be sent for a mechanical examination.
