A man has been arrested from Patna in connection with the robbery attempt at a jewellery store in Barrackpore on May 24 that left the son of the shop’s owner dead and the owner and an employee injured.
The police identified the man as Asif Khan alias Ashish Kumar.
He was the kingpin of the operation, the police said.
The Barrackpore police said, Asif Khan alias Ashish Kumar had been operating in the Patna belt and this was his first case in Bengal .
He had been convicted earlier for the murder of Papiya Ghosh, a senior teacher of Patna Women’s College, and her help in Patna in 2006.
Barrackpore police commissioner Alok Rajoria told Metro that Ashish Kumar, who was convicted in the Papiya Ghosh murder case, is Asif Khan, who has been arrested for the Barrackpore dacoity and murder.
The police said Khan was arrested on Saturday and was produced in court on Sunday.
He was one of the four men who had entered the Barrackpore store, the police said.
In 2006, Papiya Ghosh and her help Malti Devi were stabbed to death when they resisted a group of four robbers who had barged into their house. Four persons, including Ashish Kumar, were convicted for dacoity and murder. One of them was given capital punishment while the others, including Kumar, were awarded life imprisonment.
Kumar later managed to escape from custody.
Both cases are similar in nature, a senior police officer said.
“Papiya Ghosh and her help were murdered because they resisted the heist. Similarly, Niladri Singha was shot dead because he tried to resist the gang,” the officer said.
