Mangal Mondal, 31, a vegetable vendor, has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder. The police said he had confessed to the crime.

A blood-stained cement slab was found beside Jana’s body. His auto was parked nearby.

“Jana and Mondal had been drinking inside the former’s auto. Jana had recently made some indecent comments about Mondal’s wife. That had enraged Mondal and during the drinking session, he attacked Jana with an iron rod and the cement slab,” said an officer.

Jana’s home is in Vivekananda Colony, in Nonadanga. He lived with his parents, wife, a five-year-old son and a sister. Mondal lives in the same colony.

Jana used to visit a local country liquor den after work every day, said his wife. “He had not returned home last night. I tried calling him but could not connect. This morning, I came to know that his body was found,” said his wife.

Jana, officers said, was last seen around 10pm on Saturday, buying a pack of cigarettes from a neighbourhood shop.

A section of residents alleged the liquor den was a hub of criminal activities. It was later smashed by the residents.
