Based on a complaint lodged by the sister of the deceased, police have arrested five persons, including the victim’s wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law. A minor brother-in-law has been detained.

Police said the five adult persons who have been arrested have been booked under IPC sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and common intention.

“Alam Hussain, a resident of Tiljala, had gone to meet his children at his in-laws’ place at Gulshan Colony in the Anandapur area on Sunday. Later in the evening, Hussain’s sister came to know that Hussain had returned from his wife’s parental home with serious injuries,” said an officer of Anandapur police station.

He was taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital on Monday after his condition deteriorated, the police said. Hussain was declared dead at the hospital.

Hussain’s sister Ruksana Khatoon went to Anandapur police station and filed a complaint against her brother’s in-laws.

The police said they would be able to tell the exact cause of death only after they get the post-mortem report.
