Man drowns at Nimtala Ghat, two persons go missing

A man from a group that had gone to Nimtala Ghat to attend the last rites of a neighbour drowned in the Hooghly during high tide on Monday night.

Two others from the same group are missing.

Five men fell into the river. Of them, three could be pulled out. One of them was declared dead in hospital while the other two are being treated.

Two others who had fallen into the river, could not be traced till late on Tuesday.

The deceased person was identified as Santosh Sonkar, 45, of Shibtala Lane.

Two others who could not be found during search operations till Tuesday evening were identified as Vicky Singh, 29, of Gauri Para Lane and Deepak Yadav, 27, of Shibtala Lane.

Police said the incident happened around 11pm on Monday when a large group from Narkeldanga was at the Nimtala Ghat.

“There were around 30 men at the ghat and we tried to alert them about the high tide but most of them were reluctant to move. Around 11pm, the water level rose drastically. Five of them were swept off by the current. Three of them could be pulled out. One of them was later declared dead,” said an officer.

An unnatural death case has been registered with the North Port police station.
