“We have learnt from his family that the accused had recently returned from a drug rehabilitation centre. When he returned home on Monday night, he apparently demanded money from his family. His parents refused to give him money. First, he got involved in an altercation with his mother and then his father. He pushed his father to a wall and then punched him,” said an officer of Sinthi police station.

Roy’s father Utpal Roy, in his 60s, was injured during the scuffle and was taken to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he died on Tuesday morning.

The police said they started a case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

“Uddipta Roy has been arrested for the death of his father. According to his family, he has returned from a drug rehabilitation centre,” a police officer said. If convicted, Uddipta could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

The police said a forensic team was sent to the deceased person’s house to examine the spot and collect samples on Tuesday.

Manik custody extended

The judicial remand of former president of the West Bengal Primary Education Board, Manik Bhattacharya, was extended till October 28 on Tuesday.

Bhattacharya, Trinamul Congress MLA, was arrested earlier this month by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers for government-aided schools in Bengal.

The ED had earlier submitted that it had found a letter that mentioned that 44 candidates had paid Rs 7 lakh each for teaching jobs in government-aided schools.

On Tuesday, the ED submitted in the court that it was learnt during investigation that more than 600 schools had paid a large amount of money to Bhattacharya for illegal appointment of teachers.

Bhattacharya’s lawyer pleaded for bail cited his client’s health.
