A man who allegedly stole gold ornaments and cash from a Lake Town house in northeast Kolkata whose owners were out on a vacation was arrested on Sunday.
Mizanur Gazi, who hails from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas district, was arrested from his rented accomodation in Natunpally by a team from Lake Town police station based on a complaint lodged by Mahadev Mondal, an officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
According to the officer, Mondal was on a holiday to Puri with his family. They had kept their house in Lake Townβs SK Deb Road under lock and key.
When the family returned home, they did not suspect anything as the lock on the front door was intact.
βThe theft came to light when Mondal went to a bedroom at the rear of the house and found that the almirah was forcibly open and cash and ornaments were missing,β said the officer.
Mondal then went to Lake Town police station and lodged a complaint.
A team of cops accompanied him to his house and found that one of the windows had been opened to enter the house, the officer said.
The cops then started a probe and activated their sources as well scanned for any CCTV footage from the area.
βThis house did not have any CCTV cameras installed. However, one of our sources tipped us off and we managed to arrest Mizanur,β the officer said.
The police have recovered the stolen ornaments from Mizanurβs rented accommodation in Natunpally, which is not far from where the Mondals live.
