An autorickshaw driver from Baranagar on the northern fringes of the city was arrested from Nadia district on Friday, two days after he allegedly murdered his roommate for posting their pictures on social media which he didn’t like.

“Suman Biswas was arrested from Chakdah in Nadia. He has confessed to killing Suman Majhi. Biswas will be produced before the court on Saturday,” said a senior officer of the Barrackpore police commissionerate.

Biswas, who drives an auto on the Dunlop-Sinthee More route, has been sharing a rented accommodation with Majhi for nearly a year-and-a-half in Baranagar’s Subhaspally, police said.

Majhi used to work in a canteen at the Indian Statistical Institute in Baranagar and used to leave the house at 7.30am every day for work.

On Thursday, when Majhi didn’t step out of his room, his neighbours informed the police.

The police found Majhi lying dead. His roommate was missing.

A post-mortem suggested death due to strangulation.

“We started tracking the location of Biswas’s mobile and finally zeroed in on a location of Chakdah in Nadia,” the officer said.
