A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his father at their home in Azadgarh in Golf Green on Monday night, police said.

Joseph Decruz, 62, was chatting with his younger son Shane Decruz at their home around 11.30pm when they picked a quarrel over some issue, the police said.

“Shane turned violent and attacked his father with a fruit knife and stabbed him at least twice in his chest and abdomen,” said joint commissioner (crime) of the city police, Sankha Subhra Chakrabarty.

Decruz was taken to MR Bangur Hospital where he was given preliminary treatment and then shifted to SSKM Hospital for “advanced treatment”.

The Golf Green police have started a suo motu case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code that deals with the offence of attempting to murder.

Shane, who was the only person with his father at home when the assault happened, has been arrested.

Decruz, police said, works in a shop at Fancy Market in Kidderpore while his son Shane works as a help in a technician’s studio in south Calcutta.

The police said there was no apparent underlying reason or conspiracy behind the attack.

“This appears to have happened in a fit of rage. The son has confessed to his crime. The knife has been seized,” said an officer of Golf Green police station on Tuesday.
