Chief minister Mamata Banerjee called on the mobile phone of the deputy commissioner of police, south, Akash Magharia, on Tuesday and spoke to a leader of the aspiring teachers who are on an indefinite sit-in off the Maidan and requested them to call off the protest.

The protesters alleged that the school service commission had not given them appointments though they were among the waitlisted candidates.

Sources said the protesters told education department officials at the spot that they would not withdraw their protest as they had not received any written assurance from the state government.
