A young woman who got a teaching job in a government-aided school in the place of former minister Paresh Adhikary’s daughter, following complaints of corruption in appointment, has moved the high court over an alleged discrepancy in her score awarded by the West Bengal School Service Commission.

If it is proved that the commission had accorded Bobita Sarkar, the petitioner, more marks in the academic score segment than what she should have scored, her appointment might stand cancelled, said an official of the school education department.

The alleged discrepancy came to light recently. The commission had in July uploaded on its website details of the marks of those whose names feature on the merit list drawn up for the higher secondary level.

The details include the score in the written test and the academic score, which is a combination of the marks scored at the secondary, higher secondary, graduation, postgraduation and professional course levels.

Many pointed out that Bobita, who got the job in June, was accorded more marks in the academic score segment, going by the proportions fixed by the commission for the various categories.

A commission official said that of 35 allotted for the academic score, Bobita should have been awarded 31. But she was allotted 33.

The academic credentials of the candidate were verified by the commission’s regional office in Malda in 2017. The mistake, said the official who refused to be named, happened while allotting marks at the graduation level.

Siddhartha Majumdar, chairman of the school service commission who took over in January last year, said: “We have heard that a candidate has moved the high court. Once we get a notice for the case, the commission will act.”
