As many as 400 Madhyamik examination centres could be affected because of the state secondary board’s decision to scrap the recruitment of 1,911 Group D employees.

The board on Wednesday wrote to the school inspectors of the districts that are affected to ensure there are substitute personnel to replace at these centres after the withdrawal of appointments.

The examinations begin on February 23.

The board has written they have found out that in 400 centres “such staff will no longer be able to perform examination-related duties during Madhyamik 2023”.

About 7-lakh examinees will write Mahdyamik in over 2,800 centres across the state.

The board last Friday terminated the appointment of 1,911 Group D employees in government-aided schools as they allegedly secured the jobs after manipulation of marks.

They had been appointed following recommendations from the school service commission, which has now been asked by Calcutta High Court to cancel the recommendations. The board in its communication to the district inspector of schools, has attached a list of the centres in the affected districts.

“You are requested, therefore, to arrange Group-D staff in case of need notified by centre committee in such centres/ venues, with an intimation to the regional offices of the board,” says the notice signed by the deputy secretary (examination).

Subrata Ghose, the secretary of the secondary education board, said: “Each year, we write to the DIs so they take steps in case there is any deficiency in the examination-related infrastructure. This year such deficiency has been registered following the withdrawal of appointments. This will be taken care of.”

Justice Abhijit Gangopahdyay of the Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the termination of services of 1,911 Group D employees who allegedly got their jobs using illegal means.

These terminated employees have moved the division bench of the same court against the order of the termination. The court is likely to hear the appeal this week.

An official of the board said: “We cannot wait for what will happen during the court proceedings. We had to keep the backup ready....”

The Group-D staff are required to assist the head of the institutions in marking the seat number in the hall where the examinations would be held, delivery of question papers and other allied works.
