Trinamul MLA Madan Mitra alleged on Saturday that doctors at SSKM Hospital refused to examine a young man who was taken in a critical condition.
The hospital authorities denied the charge and said some people had resorted to “hooliganism”.
The young man, a lab technician at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, met with an accident on Thursday. He was admitted to the Institute of Neurosciences.
Mitra said the youth’s family reached out to him on Friday saying they would not be able to bear the expense at the institute. The MLA asked them to take the patient to SSKM Hospital. He also reached the hospital around 12.30am on Saturday.
On Saturday evening, Mitra told The Telegraph no doctor had examined the patient. “If he was examined by doctors, there would be some documents. Where are those papers? The hospital can say they could not admit a patient because there is no bed, but they did not even examine the patient,” earlier he said at the hospital.
Around noon on Saturday, the director of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (SSKM Hospital), Monimoy Banerjee, held a news conference where he refuted the charges.
“The patient was examined. They were told there is no bed. They came back a second time when a medical officer again explained to them that SSKM was not in a position to admit someone who was on ventilator support in another hospital. A little later some people came and resorted to hooliganism,” he said. “We will not tolerate any abuse of doctors and health workers. We will take a legal course.”
