Large parts of Salt Lake’s Sector I, II and III may not get their water supply most of Wednesday because new valves will be installed in multiple pumps at the Central Park pumping station.

Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said people in the affected areas would get their morning water on Wednesday from 6.30am to 9am, after which the service would remain suspended till evening.

On normal days, apart from 6.30am to 9am, water is also supplied from 11am to noon and from 4pm to 6pm.

According to an official, Salt Lake is now getting most of its water supply from the New Town water treatment plant and the pumps at the Central Park pumping station will need new valves as the pressure of the water supply is much higher than it was when the supply was being drawn from Tallah and the underground water table.

Officials of the water supply and distribution department at the civic body said the water pressure in the other distribution lines of the Central Park pumping station was dipping because of leakage of water through the older valves that are not being able to withstand the pressure.

“The volume of water has gone up but the older valves are not being to able to sustain the pressure because of which there are leaks. This needs to be eliminated and we will be able to do so once the valves are replaced with newer high capacity ones,” an official of the civic body’s water supply and distribution department said.

Water supply in New Town and Rajarhat on Wednesday, however, will remain unaffected.
