A man has been arrested in south Kolkata for allegedly sending lewd messages and making threat calls to an actress over the past few weeks.
The woman had filed a complaint with Kolkata police. Based on her complaint, the police launched a probe and found that the woman was receiving calls from at least 18 different SIM cards from various locations in the city.
An officer said, on maintaining surveillance, the man’s location was zeroed in at Garfa off Jadavpur.
Mukesh Sau, the accused, was arrested from Garfa on Sunday night and produced before the court on Monday. The court sent him police custody for 10 days.
“He has been arrested for similar charges of stalking, verbally abusing and threatening other women on two earlier occasions. He was out on bail when he committed this offence. He claimed he had got the actor’s personal number from someone in the television industry,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
Sau has been booked under sections of criminal intimidation, outrage of modesty of a woman through words and gestures, stalking and sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
Senior officers said women who face such cyber harassment should come out and report the matter to the police so that action can be taken against such cyber stalkers.
“Majority of such cases go unreported because people are scared of the legal hassles if they involve the police and the judiciary. But not reporting such cases only encourages the perpetrators. We are glad that these days more and more women are coming forward to lodge official complaints,” said a senior officer in Lalbazar.
