IndiaHeritage.in, a website founded by heritage enthusiasts, is set to introduce the IndianHeritage Awards Scheme to encourage students to learn about the rich culture and heritage of Kolkata.
The awards scheme will be open for students of classes XI and XII as a six-week programme providing in-depth learning of the history of their
city by renowned academicians and experts.
Five heritage walks will be conducted at various historically significant monuments and localities. These include walks at Chitpur, Boi Para, Bidhan Sarani erstwhile Cornwallis Street, Grey Town and more. Navpreet Arora, who runs FunOnStreets, will be the heritage walk organiser for the programme.
Dr Sukanya Mitra, assistant professor, history, Loreto College will be taking three online sessions of 90 minutes each. As an expert in history, she will be imparting significant knowledge about the founding of Calcutta, colonial Calcutta and historical significance of the city in India's independence.
During the programme, students will work on individual projects where they will be required to research, discover, experience, photograph and create blog(s) about a selected monument or area of the city from a given list of 15 places.
The research work and individual projects will be led by coordinator and consultant, Anjum Katayal who is also an editor, writer, translator and director of literary festivals.
She said, “We, Indians are privileged to have an incredibly rich history which is ancient, syncretic, multicultural, diverse and should be valued for precisely these reasons. By spreading appreciation and respect for our heritage to citizens of the future through this fun and interactive process, we hope to gather many more heritage lovers to our fold!”

The students' blogs will be published on the official website of IndiaHistory.in. Additionally, the students will receive a Certificate of Recognition for heritage awareness.
Adil Ahmed, the founder director of IndiaHistory Awards Scheme programme said, “We have started the IndiaHeritage awards scheme with an aim of encouraging love for history and heritage among students. The idea is to have the programme in several cities but the first edition in Kolkata. Hopefully our enthusiasm and passion as history lovers will pass on to the students.”
The programme is going to be about bringing Kolkata's history alive through storytelling and in a fun and entertaining way. Ahmed also said, “This certificate will be useful for students at a critical time for them - adding weight for their college admissions through independent projects that show leadership, initiative and creative curiosity. Of course, the knowledge gained by the students will last a lifetime.”
