Belle Vue Clinic has tied up with Max Hospital of Delhi to begin liver transplants. Patients picked for liver transplantation will undergo the surgery at the Delhi hospital for the first few months.
Belle Vue will treat patients with other liver ailments at its own hospital, said Pradip Tondon, CEO, Belle Vue Clinic.
But those who require a liver transplant will be taken to Max Hospital, he said.
Tondon said that Belle Vue is aiming at creating infrastructure at its Minto Park address for liver transplantation. “I am hoping that the necessary infrastructure will be ready within nine months. After that patients won’t have to travel to Max Hospital. Max will provide us with the surgeon and doctors from our hospital will form the support team.”
“There are very few options for liver transplantation in Kolkata. We want to create a good liver diseases treatment facility,” said Tondon.
Sanjiv Saigal, principal director and head, hepatology and liver transplant medicine at Max Hospital, who was at Belle Vue on Saturday, said a lot of patients across the country present themselves with an end-stage liver disease. Such patients need to undergo liver transplantation.
“The rate of liver transplantation is still very low, but it can save a lot of lives. We also need to increase organ donation to be able to undertake more liver transplantation,” he said.
