East-West Metro

East-West Metro, now operational between Sealdah and Sector V, ferried 36.97 lakh passengers between April 1 and July 31, compared to 6.89 lakh passengers carried in the corresponding period last year, the carrier said on Tuesday. The count has been on the rise since the services were extended to Sealdah on July 14 last year. The project, once fully functional, will link Howrah Maidan with Sector V.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee health

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, 79, will be discharged from hospital on Wednesday, Woodlands Hospital said in a statement on Tuesday evening. The medical board formed for Bhattacharjee s treatment met on Tuesday and "planned for discharge tomorrow", the statement said. Bhattacharjee will remain under the care of doctors from the hospital, who will visit his home on a regular basis.

Tech varsity VC quits

Gautam Majumdar stepped down as officiating vice-chancellor of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) on Tuesday, less than a month after he was appointed to the post by governor C.V. Ananda Bose. His predecessor, who, too, was handpicked by the governor, had been removed by Bose in mid-July. The governor is the ex-officio chancellor of MAKAUT and all other state-aided universities in Bengal.
