Heat spell in Kolkata
The mercury in Kolkata went up to 36.9 degrees Celsius on Monday, two notches above Sunday’s maximum and the normal for May-end. Monday was a sign of what to expect in the coming days, said a Met official. “The maximum temperature is expected to go up a couple more notches,” said the official. “There could be an occasional thunderstorm here and there but widespread and uniform thunderstorms are unlikely,” he said.

Metro smart card price up
The base price of Metro smart cards will go up from next month, the carrier said on Monday. From June 1, a card will cost Rs 150, up from Rs 120. “The shortage of change and the inability of commuters to tender exact fares have prompted this decision,” said Kausik Mitra, chief public relations officer of Metro Railway.
