Teachers honoured
Father Dominic Savio, principal of St Xavier’s College, was felicitated by members of St Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association as part of the Teachers’ Day celebrations at the Park Street institution on Monday.
Father Jairaj Veluswamy, rector of the college, was present. Teachers and non-teaching staff who are about to retire were also felicitated. The alumni association organised a friendly football match between the staff and former students in memory of Father Joseph Maliyakal, a former vice-principal of the commerce department of the college. Father Dominic Savio said the future of the country lay in the hands of its children and teachers as mentors can mould students into future leaders.
Rehabilitation for bridge demolition
About 400 people living under the Chitpore bridge in north Kolkata will have to be rehabilitated before the demolition of the bridge starts, officials said. A meeting was held at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s headquarters on Monday to discuss the modalities of rehabilitation. Tarun Saha, councillor of Ward 5, said the rehabilitation would begin soon after the inauguration of the reconstructed Tallah bridge.
