Primary education

A petition was moved in the court of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court on Monday seeking an order asking the state primary education department to include Class V in government-aided schools under the control of the primary education board. The petitioner s contention was that the department should include Class V under the primary board considering the age of the students in the fifth standard. Justice Gangopadhyay sent the case before Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and said: "Since large public interest is involved in the issue, I am sending it to the Chief Justice for considering the case as a public interest litigation."

Rabindra Bharati University registrar

The registrar of Rabindra Bharati University has been suspended by the officiating vice-chancellor of the university, said an RBU official. Justice Kaushik Chanda of Calcutta High Court asked the VC to take steps against him following a contempt of court regarding increasing the age of accompanists (persons who provide musical accompaniment to another musician or a singer), the official said. Officiating VC Suvro Kamal Mukhopadhyay said he suspended registrar Subir Maitra on Monday following the court order.

Pilgrim dies

A 64-year-old woman who came from Bihar as a Gangasagar pilgrim fell while trying to bring down her luggage from the roof of a bus on Strand Road on Monday. Sabitri Devi was taken to SSKM Hospital where she was declared dead.
