The West Bengal education department has clar-ified that it will introduce a four-year undergraduate programme from the 2023-24 academic year, replacing the three-year one, in compliance with the National Curriculum and Credit Framework recommended by the UGC.

Suranjan Das retires as Jadavpur University vice-chancellor

Suranjan Das ended his nine-year stint as the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University on Wednesday. Das, who turned 65 on June 23, 2019, was reappointed the same year after the Assembly passed a bill raising the retirement age of vice-chancellors from 65 to 70.

He could not serve the entire five-year period because Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, the chancellor of state universities, did not extend his tenure beyond May 31. Das, a former VC of Calcutta University, will take over as VC of a private University on June 1.

Summer break in schools till June 15

Chief minister MamataBanerjee on Wednesday extended the summer vacation in all schools — government, government-aided and private — till June 15 citing a “heatwave”.

Cheat cuffs

A man, who police said was a film director and producer, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly cheating a person out of Rs 20 lakh by making him invest in a film promising him the lead role.

Following a complaint by Akshay Gupta, a resident of Birbhum, the police arrested Piyush Chandra Saha. The movie for which Gupta is said to have invested money did not get made and the money was allegedly not returned
