Tiger on the loose

The tiger that escaped to a small forest near the southernmost tip of Bengal before straying into a village in the Sunderbans continued to elude a team of 120 men on Friday. The tiger is suspected to have strayed from Dhulibhashani forest in the mangrove delta. “Our men are in the forest. The trap cages have been relocated on the basis of fresh pugmarks,” said Milan Mandal, DFO of South 24-Parganas forest division, who is leading the search operation.

A team of 30 men are scouring the 33sqkm forest, he said. They are armed with dart guns and sticks. The forest has wild boars and deer but is too small to accommodate a tiger, said Mandal. "The tiger may have moved to another forest. Our main priority is to prevent it from straying into human habitat," said a forest official at the department headquarters in Salt Lake.
