Train hits SUV on Kolkata outskirts
A long-distance train hit an SUV that entered a closing level crossing gate between Khardah and Sodepur stations, in the Sealdah North suburban section, on Sunday night. Under the impact, the SUV hit a hatchback that had also entered the closing level crossing gate, said railway police sources. TV channels reported that the drivers of both cars were injured. But the railway authorities said there was "no casualty or injury". Train services were stalled on the line for over 30 minutes, said railway officials.
The Lalgola-Kolkata Hazarduari Express was approaching Khardah station around 8.40pm when the accident took place, said a railway official. The train hit one SUV, said an official communication from the railways. But local sources said two cars had "broken" the gate barrier. "The gates of the level crossing were coming down. The usual alarm system before the closure worked. But two cars entered the crossing seconds before the gate on that side came down. By the time they were near the tracks, the gate on the other side had come down. The cars were stranded as the Lalgola-Kolkata train hit the bigger car from behind," said a railway source.
"There was no casualty or injury reported in this incident. Railway has lodged an FIR in connection with the vehicle forcibly entering the level crossing," said a statement from the spokesperson for Eastern Railway. Residents started agitating at the spot against "railway negligence". The crowd soon swelled and the Railway Protection Force intervened.
