Parts of the city and its neighbouring areas got sharp spells of rain on Wednesday afternoon, while other parts were cloudy.
Around 3pm, when Gariahat in south Kolkata was dry, some areas of Salt Lake in the notheast were waterlogged. While bikers on Red Road in the central part took cover under Maidan trees, Behala in the west barely got a drizzle.
The Met office attributed the skewed distribution of rain to local clouds. “The monsoon currents are still weak. Local moisture led to the formation of thunderclouds in central and northern parts of Kolkata and its northern suburbs, triggering the rain,” said a Met official.
Till 5pm, the Met office recorded around 15mm of rain in Alipore and around 25mm each in Salt Lake and Dum Dum. The spell, which started around 2pm, left many pockets of Salt Lake and VIP Road flooded.
A Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation official said debris, leaves, branches and plastic bags had choked the drainage channels and gully pits, leading to flooding.
