Kolkata police traffic constable run over at Chittaranjan Avenue

Mohammad Nasiruddin was dragged a few metres by the truck after it knocked him down

A traffic constable was crushed under a truck at the intersection of Chittaranjan Avenue and Mahatma Gandhi Road in central Kolkata on Thursday night.

Mohammad Nasiruddin was dragged a few metres by the truck after it knocked him down around 9.55pm. Bystanders raised the alarm and forced the truck to stop before the body of the 34-year-old was pulled out from under the wheels.

A bleeding Nasiruddin was rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“The truck was coming from Howrah along MG Road and was taking a right turn towards Esplanade when Nasiruddin tried stopping him apparently because the driver had flouted a traffic signal,” said a senior officer of Jorabagan traffic guard.

A resident of Katwa in Purba Bardhaman district, Nasiruddin was posted at the MG Road crossing since evening.

The police have detained the truck driver. “The driver has identified himself as Nepal Yadav...,” the officer said.

Man jumps in front of Metro train

Metro services were hampered close to an hour on Friday morning after a man jumped in front of a New Garia-bound train. The middle-aged man was declared dead in hsopital.

“The New Garia-bound services were stalled between 7.45am and 8.24am,” said a Metro official.
