A constable of the reserve force of the Kolkata police was arrested for allegedly molesting a minor girl in an autorickshaw on Friday afternoon, police said.
According to police officers, a woman who was travelling with her hearing and speech impaired daughter from the Khanna crossing to Ultadanga, lodged a complaint with Maniktala police station alleging that one of their co-passengers had molested her daughter.
The accused was sitting next to the girl, the woman said.
“The accused has been identified as Debu Mondal, a constable of the reserve force. Mondal had allegedly touched the minor’s private parts. The girl alerted her mother and the mother with the help of the autorickshaw driver took the accused to Maniktala police station,” said Priyabrata Roy, deputy commissioner (eastern suburban division).
The incident happened near Ultadanga bridge around 3.30pm on Friday, the police said.
Mondal was arrested on the basis of the woman’s complaint and charged under sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act (Pocso).
Mondal was produced before the Sealdah court on Saturday.
He has been remanded in police custody.
A senior officer said that Mondal had been suspended from duty in accordance with the protocol for government officials being charged in criminal cases.
