Kolkata police constable arrested for abducting, robbing Burrabazar trader

A Kolkata police constable was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly being part of a team that abducted and robbed a businessman in Burrabazar in June.

An officer of Taltala police station said Debasish Das, a constable of the battalion force, has been charged with cheating, abduction and robbing.

The robbery was reported in June, when the complainant was going to a bank in Burrabazar to deposit Rs 1.25 crore.

“Before the businessman could enter the bank, two men who introduced themselves as cops approached him to search the bag he was carrying. They took the money and detained the businessman,” said the officer.

The police said the businessman was taken into a car which had a “Police” board on it and later dropped at Taltala.

He then reported the matter to Taltala police station.

The police found CCTV footage that had captured the number plate of the vehicle in which the businessman was abducted.

Earlier, four persons had been arrested, following which Kolkata police constable Amiyo Upadhyay was rounded up last week.

Based on Upadhyay’s statement, Das was arrested.
