A man has been arrested for allegedly hiring a professional killer to murder his wife at their home on the southern fringes of the city.
Police said Rajesh Jha, father of two, had hired the killer from Kamarhati for Rs 50,000. His wife Rupa survived with minor injuries as her screams for help had alerted neighbours who came to her rescue and caught the alleged hired assassin, the police said.
The incident happened in Narendrapur late on Thursday night.
Rupa has told the cops that her husband was opposed to her using a smartphone, which she had purchased on January 1 with her own earnings from giving tuition.
“The woman has said that her husband has been torturing her mentally and physically for the past few years. Recently, they had a dispute over the purchase of a smartphone for her. When he had refused to buy her one, she got one from her own earnings,” said an officer of Narendrapur police station where a case of attempt to murder has been started.
Rajesh, who works in the accounts section of a private company, had allegedly opened the main door of their house to let the two hired killers into their home on Thursday night.
One of the two men fled and was yet to be arrested till Saturday evening.
