Kolkata bids KK farewell with gun salute

The 53-year-old singer is suspected to have died of a massive cardiac arrest

Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, who died on Tuesday evening, was given a gun salute by Kolkata police on the Rabindra Sadan premises.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee flew in from Andal to pay last respects to the singer.

KK’s mortal remains were brought from SSKM Hospital around 2.30pm where an autopsy was performed after New Market police station registered a case of unnatural death.

The singer’s family members, Mamata Banerjee and others paid tributes to the singer. Mayor Firhad Hakim, police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and others were also present.

Around 2.40pm, the police band played the bugle, which was followed by the gun salute.

Hundreds of people gathered at the venue to pay their last respects to the singer who had mesmerised generations with his voice.

KK’s family arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday morning and will take the singer’s remains to Mumbai for the last rites. The 53-year-old singer is suspected to have died of a massive cardiac arrest.

KK was on a two-day tour to Kolkata and had put up at Oberoi Grand on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in central Kolkata. He reportedly took ill while performing at Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday evening.

After his return to the hotel, KK complained of feeling unwell and collapsed in his room. He was rushed to Calcutta Medical Research Institute in Alipore where doctors declared him brought dead.

The singer is survived by his wife and two children.
