The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has vaccinated about 2,000 college and university students in two days since Thursday, an official of the civic body said on Sunday.

The vaccination of students by the KMC will continue till October 8.

An official of the KMC said the vaccination was a step towards reopening of colleges and universities for in-person classes post-Diwali, provided the Covid-19 situation remains favourable.

“The state government has told us to vaccinate students of colleges and universities on a priority basis till October 8. We have already vaccinated about 2,000 students in two days since the launch of the drive on Thursday,” said an official of the KMC.

The civic body has decided to set up Covid vaccination centres on campuses that have a large number of students who want to take the jab.

The students of other institutions are being asked to visit the nearest primary health centre of the civic body to get vaccinated.

The institutions where such centres have been set up or will be set up include Bangabasi College, Surendranath College and Rabindra Bharati University.

The Kolkata municipal area has 86 colleges and universities, each of which has a nodal officer to liaise with the KMC on vaccination.

Students who are yet to be vaccinated or await the second dose should contact their institution. The institutions share their list of students with the KMC.

“We have reserved two hours from 2pm at the primary health centres to vaccinate students. This will benefit the students as they do not have to come and wait for long in a queue,” a KMC official said.
