In a series of social media posts, throughout the week, KMC has apprised its followers of the punitive measures it has undertaken to keep Kolkata roads clean.

“Regular patrolling is done by our SWM (solid waste management) department across the city,” stated KMC authorities on a Facebook post.

The fines are being imposed using a provision in KMC’s Solid Waste Management Bylaws, 2020.

The nature of offences cited in the penalty notices has varied from dumping waste on the roadside to encroaching sidewalks.

The violators have been asked to pay the fine within the stipulated time of 21 days from the day the notice was handed over. If the fines went unpaid, the same can be recovered as arrears on property tax, the notices stated.

Last week, KMC authorities had fined at least two people for burning waste in the open.
