A man allegedly stabbed his wife to death with a kitchen knife and attacked his daughter at their Manohar Pukur Road home before he himself dialled 100 to alert police and gave himself up.
The police said Arvind Bajaj 47, a resident of 33/C Manohar Pukur Road, under the jurisdiction of Rabindra Sarobar police station, has been unemployed for the past two years. He had allegedly stabbed his wife Priyanka, 45, and injured their 18-year-old daughter on Saturday evening.
“It is learnt that he was employed in his father-in-law’s business. But he has claimed that he has been unemployed for the past two years. We are verifying both statements. It appeared that the couple often fought over some matrimonial dispute,” said an officer of Rabindra Sarobar police station.
Investigators said that when they reached the address, they found Bajaj sitting calmly in one of the rooms. The woman and their daughter were taken to SSKM Hospital, where Priyanka was declared dead while the girl was hospitalised with multiple stab wounds, the police said.
The police said they had learnt that the girl had passed Class XII examinations and was preparing for competitive exams.
“We are yet to find out the exact cause or trigger behind the incident. The man is not uttering a word. He has shown no signs of panic or remorse. We are trying to speak to him,” said a senior police officer of south east division on Saturday night.
“We are waiting for the girl to regain senses. She will be in a position to share the actual sequence of events,” said an officer.
Officers said they were speaking to the neighbours and trying to contact the family’s relatives to know more about the man.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been started against Bajaj. He will be produced before the court on Sunday.
The incident happened two days after a man had killed his wife at her workplace in Netajinagar and then attempted to kill himself with the same knife.
In that case, the husband was allegedly suspected that his wife was having an affair.
