An employee of a courier service provider was arrested on Friday for allegedly stealing ornaments worth Rs 3.6 lakh that he was to deliver to a family in Salt Lake.

Police said the owner of a jewellery store in Burrabazar had hired the service of a courier company near his shop to send the ornaments to an address in FC Block.

“The family knows the owner of the jewellery shop for years. They requested the owner to deliver the ornaments at their home.” an officer said

The service provider assigned the task to one of its delivery men. When the man reached the house, the family refused to accept the package as the seal was broken.

The delivery man claimed he had been robbed. “During questioning he admitted that he had removed ornaments from the package,” the officer said.
