The Jadavpur University authorities have decided to immediately shift all undergraduate first-year students who had been allotted rooms in the main hostel to New Boys' Hostel located on the university campus.

The main hostel is located next to Jadavpur police station, about 400 metres from the university campus.

The shifting started on Thursday night.

The decision followed the death of first-year student Swapnadeep Kundu, who shared a room with other students in the A-2 block of the main hostel.

Swapnadeep is suspected to have jumped from the second floor of the hostel. There are allegations that he had been ragged.

A notice issued on Thursday evening and signed by JU's dean of students, Rajat Roy, said: “As directed, all undergraduate first-year students for the session 2023-24 allotted to A-1 block and A-2 block, main hostel, are instructed to shift temporarily to New Boys Hostel within today itself.”

The notice said: “It is further notified that no passed-out students, as well as outsiders, are allowed to stay inside the hostel with immediate effect. Hostel superintendents are requested to send the name/s of such passed out students or outsiders, as the case may be...."

Parthapratim Roy, secretary of JU teachers' association, said: “We have sought immediate expulsion of the former students and outsiders...."
