The parents of the first-year undergraduate student of Jadavpur University who was allegedly ragged and eventually died on August 10 met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Monday and expressed satisfaction over the progress of the
investigation into their son’s death.
“Didi promised us that no culprit will be spared. She even talked to (city police commissioner) Vineet Goyal in front of us and took stock of the ongoing investigation. We are happy with the progress (of investigation),” said the boy’s mother.
Relatives accompanying the parents said the chief minister also promised to take responsibility for the boy’s brother’s education.
“The chief minister has informed us that the local health centre of (the name of the village) will be renamed after the student. The government is likely to offer a job to his mother in the local health centre where a bust of the student will be erected,” said a relative who accompanied the parents.
Sources said that the chief minister had recently spoken to the father of the student to know whether they needed any help.
“The parents requested the chief minister that they would like to meet her. As the chief minister could take out some time from her schedule on Monday, she called the parents at Nabanna,” said a source.
Sources also said the chief minister assured the parents that the government would stand by the family during the meeting that lasted around half an hour from 4pm.
