Jadavpur University has constituted a probe committee after the arts faculty students’ union submitted a complaint, alleging that a student has received a threat that he would be beaten up whenever he enters the hostel.
Students from the engineering and science faculties have been accused of threatening the student who used to stay in a guest room at the hostel before March 2020 after being allegedly subjected to ragging.
Samantak Das, a pro vice-chancellor at JU, said a committee has been constituted with three teachers, each from the science, arts and engineering faculty, to probe the complaint.
The student received the threat after he came to the dean of students’ office earlier this week seeking a hostel bed following the start of in-person classes from November 16.
“The student was told by those from the engineering and science faculties that he would be given ‘treatment’ as he resumed his stay at the main hostel and was verbally abused. The arts faculty students union has told the university authorities in their letter that the student faced ragging previously and sought intervention,” he said.
The official said, the office-bearers from the either unions have denied the allegation.
On Thursday afternoon, the students from the arts faculty staged an agitation in front of VC’s office, protesting the incident.
