The coupling between two coaches of the Up Ispat Express came off and the train was split into two near Santragachhi station on Sunday morning.

There were no casualties, said railway officials. But the train was stuck for over two hours.

The Howrah-Kantabanji Ispat Express was about to enter Santragachhi when the incident took place around 9.05am, said officials.

“Each coach of a train is attached to the next with a coupling. The coupling between the third and fourth coaches came off,” said an official.

Sources said a bigger accident was avoided because the train was not speeding. The train was split into two — the engine and three coaches comprised one and the remaining coaches the other.

“Engineers rushed to the spot and the train was taken to Santragachhi and the affected coaches were detached. Later, two new coaches were brought and the train left Santragachhi at 11.17am,” said an official.
