Doctors at a city hospital had to play metal cutter for a surgery on a man who had an iron rod pierced through his right arm after an accident.
Sujoy Chakraborty, 30, a resident of Hasnabad in North 24-Parganas who survives on daily wages, loads and unloads construction materials.
Early on September 13, he was being driven home in a mini-truck after an assignment. The truck met with an accident on EM Bypass, near Medica Superspecialty Hospital.
An iron rod pierced the upper part of Chakraborty’s right hand. He was taken to Medica around 4am and was rushed to an operating theatre, where he was given ice fluids and medications to stop the bleeding.
“The rod was around 9 feet in length. A large portion of the rod was protruding from either side of the wound, causing extensive injury to the surrounding tissues.... We had to arrange for a metal-cutter to cut one end of the rod near the skin, so that the other portion could be removed easily,” said Udipta Ray, senior consultant, gastrointestinal surgery, at the hospital.
Ray led a team that conducted the surgery on Chakraborty. The remaining portion of the rod was then removed, preventing further damage to the surrounding tissues.
However, the skin was lacerated and the edges of the skin were completely burnt because of the heat of the cutter. The bleeding vessels were all secured and the dead or damaged were removed. Chakraborty was discharged on September 14.
“He is under the Swasthya Sathi scheme of the state government,” said an official of the hospital.
