The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), east, is all set to present Kolkata tourists with a special New Year’s gift. A luxury train, Bharat Gaurav Express, is being readied for the public and if everything goes according to plans, it would be running by February 2023.
According to Zafar Azam, the group general manager of IRCTC, east zone, the train is a shorter and more affordable version of the celebrated Maharajas' Express but is likely to have several of the facilities of the latter. Complete with special dining spaces, bars and sleeping cabins, the train has been designed to provide a luxury experience for the guests. “Though the route is yet to be finalised, the train would travel to a number of important travel destinations where historic and cultural monuments like the Taj Mahal are located” Azam added.
A variety of cuisines are also likely to be available on the train, including Bengali’s favourite macher jhol-rice, Chinese, continental and other regional delicacies like litti-chokha.
“We have already acquired the coaches from South Eastern Railway and are in the process of decorating them. The interior work should be complete by the end of January and the train should be ready to run by February 2023,” Azam said.
Talking about the fare, he said the exact amount has not been decided but it will be far less than Maharajas' Express, which costs about Rs 4.80 lakh for seven days and six nights of travelling. “Those who cannot afford the experience of the luxury trains, can opt for the affordable Bharat Gaurav with a similar experience at a cheaper price,” Azam said.
