An interior designer, who was sitting with his friend on the terrace of his house on Sunday night, has been arrested for allegedly pushing his friend off the parapet after the friend died in a city hospital.
Based on the complaint of Kushal Chakraborty’s family, police have charged the accused, Debanjan Sen, with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and arrested him on Tuesday afternoon.
The police said the incident happened on the night of May 22 when Chakraborty, a resident of Pashupati Bhattacharjee Road, had gone to Sen’s house, who was his friend, at Senhati Colony in southwest Kolkata’s Behala area.
“Kushal Chakraborty, 28, and Debanjan Sen, 30, were sitting on the parapet of the terrace of the latter’s two-storey house and consuming alcohol when Kushal fell on the ground. He was first taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital from where he was shifted to NRS Medical College and Hospital,” said an officer of Behala police station.
Chakraborty, who used to work as a compounder with a veterinary doctor, succumbed to his injuries close to Monday midnight.
After his death, Chakraborty’s younger brother, Kunal, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his brother was pushed off the terrace with an intention to kill him.
“According to the statement of the complainant, the two men had a fight and during the altercation, his elder brother was pushed off the terrace. We are probing his allegations,” the officer added.
Based on the complaint, Sen was summoned to Behala police station on Tuesday and later arrested.
The charge, if proven in a , could lead to a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.
The Telegraph could not contact Sen’s family for their reaction.
An officer who has examined Sen, said he had claimed before the police that both of them were in a state of intoxication and that he had no intention to push or kill his friend.
