A final-year researcher of the integrated PhD programme at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, was found dead inside a laboratory on the Mohanpur campus on Monday.
The body of Subhadip Roy, 29, a researcher in solid-state physics, was found lying on the laboratory floor, said sources at IISER.
The director of the institute, Sourav Pal, told The Telegraph: “I am not aware of how the researcher died…. It is very sad news.”
“Around 11am, some students found the door of the laboratory on the first floor of the Research Building bolted from inside. Security guards broke open the door and found Subhadip lying on the floor. His face had turned black. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors said he had died several hours ago,” an IISER official said.
A resident of Nagerbazar in Dum Dum, Subhadip was first examined by a doctor of the institute and then taken to Jagulia Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday, after which the body will be handed to Subhadip’s mother.
Subhadip lost his father two years ago.
The researcher was popular among students and was once general secretary of the students’ affairs committee, sources said.
An official said Subhadip had joined IISER in 2014 as a student of a seven-year integrated PhD course in physics.
