IIM Calcutta has initiated an exercise to determine whether the institute has adequate preparations for starting in-person classes from November 16, said an official of the B-school.

The institute has called 75 per cent of its students back to the campus in phases over the past few months but the classes are still being held over digital platforms as a precaution against Covid.

Students back in hostels are attending the online classes using the Net facility on the campus.

The official said that although IIM-C comes under the Union education ministry, the Disaster Mitigation Act entails that the local government’s (state government) decision on reopening can be implemented.

“We are assessing how many students can be accommodated in each classroom. We are trying to ascertain whether the classes have to be held in a blended mode (a combination of offline and online classes) because the presence of students in each classroom has to be scaled down,” the official said.

Manish Thakur, dean (new initiatives and external relations), said: “The institute is looking at the guideline issued by the government of West Bengal and accordingly making preparations in the direction of opening up.”
