The MTech final-year students of IIEST who will be returning to the campus from October will be allotted rooms in hostels in a way that the physical distancing norm to prevent Covid infection is maintained.

The bigger rooms that used to accommodate four students before the pandemic will now be shared by two students at the most, officials of the Shibpur institute said.

There will be provisions for single occupancy as well.

“In the dining area, each table will be shared by two to three students. Earlier, six to seven students would share a table. Students will be sent in batches to the dining area,” he said.

The 250-odd MTech final-year students will start returning to the campus on October 20 so they can go to the labs for their research.

The institute on Thursday asked the students to apply for the hostel allotment.

“While allocating rooms we want to ensure that the students maintain the physical distancing norm,” said Sudipto Mukhopadhyay, the chief warden of the hostel.

Institutes across the country have begun recalling students, though there is a concern whether the UGC guidelines related to reopening of hostels in strict adherence to Covid protocols could be followed.
