The police after questioning her also arrested Sheikh Mohammed Nazmul Alam from his house in Nandigram to whom Das had sold the ornaments, a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

According to the officer, Das was engaged as a domestic help by Sharmistha Chakraborty around one and a half years back.

On February 14, Chakraborty filed a complaint at airport police station stating that several of her gold rings, earrings, bangles and other jewellery items, which were kept inside her bedroom almirah, were missing.

The police mounted electronic surveillance on Das and tracked her cellphone tower location to her address in Nandigram.

A team from airport police station then set out for the address.

Although Das denied being involved in the theft, during questioning she said that she had picked the ornaments from the almirah and had sold them off, the officer said.

“She also gave us the name and address of the man who bought the ornaments. We raided his house and arrested him as well,” the officer added.

The police team also recovered the stolen jewellery from Alam’s house.

Both Das and Alam have been charged under several sections of the IPC, including 381 (theft by a servant).
