A home guard posted at a south Kolkata police station has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a 23-year-old youth, who was allegedly lured into a trap by a group through a fake Facebook profile.
Police identified the arrested home guard as Subhankar Das. He was attached to Regent Park police station.
“He was part of the team that kidnapped the college student and extorted Rs 41,000 from him. The team ran a fake Facebook account in the name of a woman and interacted with the student through it. They called him for a meeting to a location in Haridevpur. The student, who was under the impression that he was interacting with a woman, went to the location and was kidnapped by the gang,” an officer said.
Earlier, two men were arrested in the case. The police said a search was on for the remaining members of the team.
“The men who kidnapped the youth had posed as police officers. They threatened to arrest the student and forced him to pay Rs 41,000. He was released after the payment, but he kept getting ransom calls for more money. The student then reported the matter to the police,” the officer said.
