A student of Aliah University died after being hit by a vehicle in front of the university’s campus in New Town on Sunday afternoon.
Shakil Ahmed, a postgraduate student of geography, attended classes on the Park Circus campus of the university, but stayed at a hostel on the New Town campus.
One of his friends said Ahmed had planned to return home to Murshidabad district on Sunday. “He was walking towards the EcoScape building, from where he was to board a vehicle for his hometown,” the friend said.
The police said the vehicle that hit Ahmed was moving at a high speed. Under the impact of the crash, the student was flung off and he landed on the adjoining service road.
“The vehicle hit guardrails that were placed to act as speed-breakers. It fled after knocking down Shakil Ahmed,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
Students of the New Town campus held a demonstration on the road where the accident happened, demanding action against the person who was driving the killer vehicle.
Trinamul MLA Tapash Chatterjee visited the spot and assured the students of police action within a day. Police officers said they were searching for the vehicle.
