The high court on Friday wanted to know if Kolkata Port Trust could provide a place where the Esplanade bus terminus could be relocated, a shift that the high court had first ordered in 2007.

The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shampa Sarkar directed the additional solicitor general to be present when the matter will be heard next on August 4.

The bench also asked the additional solicitor general to serve notice to the port authorities.

The defence ministry also submitted an affidavit on Friday saying there were many requests pending from organisations and clubs to allow parking in the Maidan.

Environment activist Subhas Datta, one of the parties in the matter and who was present in the court on Friday, said the court had earlier asked the authorities to explore the possibility of a multi-tier parking facility for buses once the bus terminus is shifted from Esplanade.

Since the defence ministry is the custodian of the Maidan, the court had sought its opinion, he said.

“There are large pieces of land in the port area and that could be used to set up a parking facility,” he told The Telegraph.
