A 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Friday after he lost control of his motorbike at Langalpota in east Kolkata’s Rajarhat, police said.

Chiranjit Tarafder, a fishmonger, was found bleeding in the bushes by the roadside by passers-by and other motorists. His two-wheeler was lying on the road. He was not wearing a helmet, an officer of Rajarhat police station said.

The passers-by alerted a police patrol team who then took Tarafder to a nearby government-run healthcare unit where doctors declared him dead. “It is unclear how he lost control of the motorbike and crashed. A vehicle could have brushed his two-wheeler from behind,” said the officer.

The death highlights how a section of motorcyclists do not care about wearing even basic riding gears like helmets despite sustained efforts by the administration to raise awareness.

On Thursday, The Telegraph reported how a college student, who had been posting on social media videos of zipping through the city on his bike at speeds of up to 173km an hour, was made to drive at 30km wearing a helmet as part of Safe Drive Save Life campaign by Bidhannagar police.
